Five days is the sweet spot for a first Kerala trip: enough time to see the hills, the spice country and the backwaters without spending your whole holiday inside a car. The classic loop - Kochi to Munnar to Thekkady to Alleppey and back to Kochi - covers roughly 400 km of driving, but the distances are spread out so no single day feels punishing.
This itinerary assumes you land at Kochi (COK), Kerala's best-connected airport, and travel by hired car with driver, which is how most package trips run. The roads climb from sea level to about 1,600 metres in Munnar and back down again, so the scenery changes almost hourly - coconut plantations giving way to rubber, then cardamom, then endless tea.
Day 1: Land in Kochi, drive to Munnar
Try to land by early afternoon. The Kochi-Munnar drive is about 110 km but takes four to four and a half hours - the second half is winding ghat road, and it is slower than the distance suggests. The route itself is part of the experience: waterfalls like Cheeyappara and Valara appear right beside the highway, especially impressive after rain.
Check in, and if daylight remains, take a short walk through the tea estates near your stay. Save the main sightseeing for tomorrow; Munnar evenings get cool (often 10-15 degrees Celsius), so a light jacket earns its place in your bag.
Good to know: If your flight lands late, stay the night near Kochi and start early next morning instead of doing the ghat road in the dark.
Day 2: Munnar - tea gardens and viewpoints
A full day in the hills. Start with a tea estate visit and a tea museum stop to see how the leaf becomes your morning cup, then work through the classic circuit: Mattupetty Dam and its lake, Echo Point, and Top Station on the Tamil Nadu border for the biggest valley views of the trip. If you prefer walking to viewpoints, ask your driver about short plantation trails instead - the estates themselves are the real attraction.
Nature lovers can swap part of the circuit for Eravikulam National Park, home of the Nilgiri tahr. Note that the park closes for a few weeks around February-March during the calving season, so check before you plan it in. Spending two nights in Munnar means you can do all this without watching the clock.
Day 3: Munnar to Thekkady - spice country and Periyar
The Munnar-Thekkady drive is about 90 km, roughly three to three and a half hours through cardamom plantations - one of the prettiest stretches of the whole loop. Arrive by lunch and spend the afternoon around Periyar. The signature activity is the boat cruise on Periyar Lake inside the tiger reserve; sightings of elephants and bison from the boat are a matter of luck, but the lake and forest scenery are guaranteed. Boat slots are limited, so book the cruise in advance or reach the ticket counter early.
In the evening, add a guided spice plantation walk - pepper, cardamom, vanilla and clove growing within arm's reach - and, if you enjoy performances, a Kathakali or Kalaripayattu (martial arts) show in Kumily town.
Day 4: Thekkady to Alleppey - houseboat day
Leave by 8 am. The Thekkady-Alleppey drive is around 140 km and takes four to four and a half hours, descending from the hills into the flat, green backwater country. Houseboats typically board around noon and the standard overnight package runs to about 9 am the next day, with lunch, dinner and breakfast cooked on board - Kerala-style fish curry on a moving houseboat is a trip highlight in itself.
The afternoon is pure slow travel: gliding past paddy fields that sit below water level, village jetties, churches and toddy shops. Boats anchor for the night by early evening as per backwater rules, so the cruising happens mostly between lunch and sunset.
- Book the houseboat in advance in peak season (December-January) - good boats sell out
- Confirm what is included in writing: meals, AC hours (many boats run AC only at night), and the cruise route
- One bedroom suits a couple; family groups should look at 2-3 bedroom boats rather than sharing
- Prefer operators with recent reviews and proper certification over the cheapest quote at the jetty
Good to know: As of 2026, overnight houseboats broadly range from about Rs 8,000 to Rs 25,000+ per night depending on season, boat category and AC - always check current rates before booking.
Day 5: Disembark and depart from Kochi
After breakfast on board, you disembark around 9 am. Alleppey to Kochi airport is about 85 km and takes two to two and a half hours, so an afternoon or evening flight is comfortable. If you have a late flight, spend a couple of hours in Fort Kochi on the way - the Chinese fishing nets, St Francis Church and the cafe lanes of the old quarter make a gentle final stop.
A note on the monsoon
Kerala gets two monsoons: the main southwest monsoon from roughly June to September and a lighter northeast spell around October-November. Travel does not stop - the hills turn intensely green, waterfalls are at full force, and hotel plus houseboat rates drop noticeably - but expect rain interruptions, occasional leech-y trails in the hills, and rougher conditions for the Periyar boat ride. December to February is the most comfortable window; the monsoon months suit travellers who prioritise scenery and value over predictable sunshine.
